The Kibbutz at 100: A Century of Crises and Reinvention
Saturday, November 13, 2010

Have you ever wondered about the history of the Kibbutz?
Congregation Beth Elohim’s Adult Education presents The Kibbutz at 100: A Century of Crises and Reinvention with Professor Shulamit Reinharz
Professor Reinharz will begin by explaining how the first kibbutz was conceived and founded by a woman - Manya Wilbushewitz Shohat.
She will describe how kibbutzim developed, the crises they underwent, and the unusual measures they are taking today. The kibbutz was an important building block of Israeli society before 1948 and in the decade thereafter. Does it still have the function today? Professor Reinharz will draw on her book, 100 Years of Kibbutz Life: A Century of Crises and Reinvention, which is being published by Transaction Books due out in spring, and which she co-edited with an Israeli colleague, Professor Michal Palgi. Another book Professor Reinharz wrote about kibbutz life will be available for signing, Observing the Observer (Oxford University Press).
