Top 10 for 2010 Style Resolutions by Jennifer Bakken

With every New Year comes a new list of resolutions for many of us out there. And although I'm not the huge fan of setting what often are unattainable goals for oneself every January, I do believe there are certain resolutions that should be made as it pertains to fashion and how you wear it.
Here are my top 10 style resolutions for 2010:
1. Never wear running shoes with denim. This casual look could not be frumpier, or less flattering. Running shoes are for just that – running; so if you're looking for a stylish pair of "tennis shoes" to kick around in I suggest you purchase a pair of distressed Jack Purcell's from J.Crew.
2. Look and feel good in your workout wear. As this is the month where many of us get motivated to work out again, make it the time to evaluate what you're wearing while doing so. Does your athletic wear make you look long and lean, or short and stubby? If it's the latter get into a shop like Lulemon – ASAP to have an expert outfit you in some flattering gear.
3. Make sure that the clothes in your closet truly fit you. Try on all the pieces you've purchased over the years and take a close look at yourself in the mirror. Are there pieces that are still in style but look too baggy, too short, too long, etc.? If so bag them up and make an appointment with your tailor for a tune-up.
4. Invest in a classic pair of sunglasses and a timeless watch. These are the essential pieces you wear every day that say a great deal about your personal "brand". This year make absolutely sure they're delivering the right message.
5. Just because you're running errands doesn't mean your invisible. So if you only make the time to toss on any 'ole thing, I offer this piece of advice: make it black and pair it with some fabulous accessories, (i.e. a fabulous bag, the perfect sunglasses, a pair of real or not real – but look real, diamond earrings).
6. Buy less trend and more classics. Make it a point to try to avoid the impulse buying altogether this year and set some goals for investing in your wardrobe. If it helps make a list of your must-have investment pieces and keep it in your purse to reference before you step up to the register.
7. Always dress appropriately for your age. No woman looks good in an outfit that's meant for someone 10 years younger or 10 years older than her. Here's a tip: if you're having trouble deciding whether something's appropriate for you take a moment to look around at the people shopping next to you, if they look around your age you're most likely on the right track, if not I suggest asking an honest friend/personal shopper/sales assistant for their thoughts before you purchase
8. No nude hose – ever. Self-tanner is the ONLY way to go if you're trying to achieve the "tan" leg look, otherwise hose with color or patterned tights are the only way to go.
9. Make sure the denim you're wearing fits well and has a clean and classic look. Do your best to keep any sort of stitching on the back pocket to a minimum, and note that unless you're buying denim for your daughter, any other embellishments on your jeans are forbidden.
10. Wear seasonally appropriate fabrics. This means no linens allowed during cold months and heavy wools*, (*lightweight wools or blends excluded), in the warm ones. I strongly suggest rotating out seasonally inappropriate clothing either by moving them to the back of the closet or moving them into storage; it will make getting ready in the morning that much easier.
