Q: How do I choose an easy project for a beginner sewing student?
A: The first thing you look for when starting a sewing project for a beginner is an easy pattern. Look for the following:
• Relatively few pieces (2,3 or 4 pieces)
• Words on the pattern description and pattern envelope like “easy”, 1-2 hr. pattern (note: they never take 1-2 hrs., especially for beginners!)
• No patterns for stretch knits. (By the way, Fleece is a knit, but flannel, which is also soft and cuddly is not. NOTE: Watch for my tips on fabric choice coming next week.)
A few tips from Becca:
• “Simplicity” is the name of a pattern company, not a description of level of difficulty.
• “Vogue” patterns tend to be more difficult and are not a good choice for beginners.
• Know your measurements, so the size or size range of the pattern will fit!
• Don’t be afraid to sit down and spend some time with the pattern books. I bring a notepad with me, write down pattern numbers and then look at the patterns themselves side by side to choose the best and easiest one.
