February: Wet-Felted Heart Pendant
Sunday, February 20, 2011

Wet felting is easy and is used in many craft projects. Lately it has become very popular! Here is an easy heart pendant that will require both wet felting and needle felting.
Supplies:

*Roving (unspun wool [felt]) in a couple of different colors
*A toothbrush, or any stiff bristled brush
*18-20 gauge wire
*Round nose and flat nose pliers (you can also use needle nose pliers)
*Hot water with a couple of drops of dish detergent
*Bubble wrap

1.) Cut a piece of wire approx. 4 inches long. Using the round nose pliers, make a loop on one end. You can twist it around with the flat nose pliers to finish it, but it is not necessary. Now shape the wire into a heart (you will be able to do this with your fingers). You will not be using all the wire – the heart should be about 1 inch across at the most. Cut when you have finished shaping the wire into the heart shape, then fold over one side of the heart (see example).

2.) Pull a piece of the roving, not too thick, but approx. 1 inch wide and 6 inches long. Take your brush, dip it in the hot water/soap mixture and start brushing the roving in one direction. Brush until the threads start to “felt”, meaning when they start to look like a piece of felt. Add thin strands of another color of roving to the top of the felted piece. Dip the brush again and tap, tap, tap on the added strands so it adheres to the felted piece.

3.) Squeeze out excess water. Start to wrap the felted piece around the wire. When the felt is wrapped all around, you can needle felt it, which is done using a felting needle and a block of Styrofoam. To make the felt a bit tighter, you can wash the pendant in your washing machine (in pantyhose, to keep it together).

4.) Hang the pendant on a chain and give to your Valentine (or spoil yourself!)!
