Color Your World
Friday, September 10, 2010
I have my shiny red apple, my bright yellow #2 Dixon – Ticonderoga, and my black and white Mead composition book. I feel excited. I feel nervous. I hope I get the wicked cool homeroom teacher. I am ready to go back to school!

You can actually see what I’m talking about, right?!? Color evokes emotion, whether it’s picking out a new blue trapper keeper or sitting around the kitchen table with your family. To me, color choice might just be the most important element in interior design!

Perhaps that’s why so many people have trouble choosing colors for their homes. I’m guessing that lots of you reading this right now haven’t painted rooms of your own because those little 1” x 1” chips are holding you back. “So many to choose from…what if I make a mistake?!?” It really can be a daunting task. But let me ask you this, if your child was having trouble in school, would you think twice about getting a tutor to help? Why not get yourself the help you deserve…I’m talking about a color consultation.
Because color evokes so much feeling and emotion, your home should be a reflection of you and the way you hope others feel when they come for a visit. So, maybe you moved into a home whose entry way is “Bar Harbor Beige” but you are more of a “Candy Stripe Pink” then it’s time to pull out the paint brushes!
Here are a few pointers I’d like to share to help you go from a teeny tiny paint chip to the rooms that truly make you feel at home:
- Before you begin the redecorating process you should take a look around and examine all the colors your already have in your home. Not just colors painted on the wall, but everything from rugs to accessories. Take an inventory of your closet as well. The colors you love to wear everyday will also help guide you to discovering what colors will feel right in your home.
- So many things can influence how we perceive color. The texture, pattern, lighting and especially other colors that are close by can change the effect of the colors we choose. Keep these things in mind when determining the color palate for your home.
- Have fun with colors…think hot pinks, lime greens, and vibrant oranges! They can spice up a room if you use them sparingly, especially in accessories! But keep in mind the space you are decorating. Colors set the mood for the space so choose according to what feelings you want to evoke. If you want a bedroom or bathroom that is restful and soothing, stick with cool blues and soft yellows.
- Don’t be afraid to try something new. If you want to go for a red accent wall in your family room…it’s only a can of paint!

The best teacher doesn’t give you the answers, but rather guides you to find the right answers on your own. And while I can’t help you with your calculus homework, I can certainly help teach you more about color and guide you in creating your best home. So don’t be afraid to ask for help…and hire a “tutor” for yourself!

A MK Design Color Consult is $50 for the initial meeting, which includes color discussion for the first room. Each additional room is $25 you would like to be consulted on at that time.
