Galpal Giveaway
Mommy and her son love to play together and act like superheroes!  But one day, Mommy has something serious to discuss.  She explains to her little boy that the doctor has found some “yucky stuff” in her body, and that she’ll need very strong medicine to get rid of it.  Unfortunately, Mommy will need to go away for a while, and the strong medicine will take her “superpowers” away.  She will look different, and not be able to do a lot of the fun things she normally does.  What will her son do while she’s away?  How will the medicine change her?  When and how will Mommy get her superpowers back?

Where Did Mommy’s Superpowers Go? is a heartwarming story for all families struggling to balance a serious health crisis while caring for small children.  Based on the author’s personal experience, the story shows the close and loving relationship between a little boy and his mommy. When Mommy gets sick, she talks openly with her son in language he can easily understand, and does so in a positive, upbeat way that is less frightening for him. Her little boy learns what to expect, and along the way, he and Mommy still have some fun!

This new book by Jenifer Gershman is unique in that no particular disease or treatment is specified, so it can be a useful resource for all families facing this challenge, regardless of diagnosis.

In 2007, Jenifer Gershman was diagnosed with amyloidosis, a rare, life-threatening bone marrow disease.  In an instant, the fit and active young mother found herself facing an aggressive treatment of high-dose chemotherapy with a stem cell transplant, which would require Jenifer to be separated from her four year-old son, Jason, for weeks.  In an effort to prepare Jason for her absence, as well as the changes he would see in her physical abilities and appearance, Jenifer created a story to help him understand the situation.  Her new book was written specifically for families coping with rare, less-known diseases for which there are no resources.  Now in remission, Jenifer is happy to be living a healthy and active life with Jason and her husband Steven in Maynard, MA.
