Q & A with Revolution Community Acupuncture: Treatment for Babies

Q: Can acupuncture treatment help babies (if they have trouble eating/sleeping/teething) and at what age can they receive treatment?
A: Great Question! Let me start off by saying that my goal, when working with children or adults, is always conservative care. This is especially true with children who can show remarkable ability to heal with simple and natural treatments. For example one of the most common things I have seen in the clinic is parents who want to avoid putting their newborns on anti-acid medication for colic/reflux. Finding a natural way to address this can prevent a child from going on a medication, a more conservative option in my opinion. So, can children have acupuncture? The short answer is yes, children have benefited from acupuncture for centuries. Different acupuncturists will work with children in different ways. Some people will do acupuncture on babies while others will wait until the child is much older. There is nothing unsafe about using acupuncture for babies, the question is more about comfort. In my clinic I practice a Japanese form of Acupuncture called Shonishin for babies and smaller children. This is a non-needle treatment that uses tapping and rubbing to stimulate the acupuncture points. It is very relaxing and can be used for children of any age and for many of the most common childhood illnesses including colic, teething, digestive problems, sleep, asthma, chronic ear infections etc. Herbs and other natural supplements are also very safe and effective for children of all ages and may be recommended. As children get older many become more interested in acupuncture with needles and may choose to try it themselves. Once children get to about 11 or 12 years old, regular Acupuncture with needles is generally recommended. At one time I was giving acupuncture to three generations of a family, a 6 year old boy, his mother and grandmother would all come in for treatment together. They would take a little nap and wake up feeling wonderful, it was great!
