Since returning from vacation Suzy and The Littles have been frantically hitting every Cville hotspot they can before summer quickly comes to an end. This means lunching at some of our favorite eateries, as well as checking out some new ones. Last week we were lucky enough to pencil the new Downtown Hot Dog Company into our schedule - and we loved it!
This isn't your average hot dog cart, folks - it's a bright, fun restaurant filled with friendly people and more dog ecoutrements than you could ever imagine. If you're not wooed in by Harry the Hot Dog Man you will be by owners, Eric and Jenny Saunders. Who obviously have kids (they were so kind to mine!) and enjoy what they are doing.
While the Little Suzy's are admittedly not real adventurous eaters (one ordered her dog with ketchup and mustard, the other with chili and cheese!) we all left the restaurant feeling full and happy. For those with tastebuds somewhat more defined than that of a 7 year old the menu offers everything from the traditional Chicago (poppyseed bun, yellow mustard, onions, neon relish, pickle spear, tomato wedges and celery salt) to the less traditional Wing Dog (Texas Pete wing sauce, diced celery and bleu cheese) to the downright bizarre Nutty Monkey (peanut butter and banana). And if you don't find exactly what you're looking for in the Gourmet Dog section you can always build a Custom Dog from a selection of toppings that would make some pizza places jealous!
The price is right at The Downtown Hot Dog Company, too. 100% Vienna Beef dogs start at just $3.75. But don't feel like you need to limit yourself to just that. They also have a Yves veggie dog that Suzy hears is delicious - and how can you resist a restaurant that has polish sausage on the menu?
The Downtown Hot Dog Company is located in York Place at 112 Main Street on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville. Stop by for lunch or dinner today - and tell them Suzy sent ya!
