While they may be worlds away, the women of the Sudan will be in the hearts, and on the minds of many on Sunday November 27th as the Sudan Canvas Project makes it's debut here in Fairfield County. Supported by local artists, this moving exhibit is a not to be missed event, happening on the heels of Thanksgiving, and reminding us how much we have to be thankful for.
The Sudan Canvas Project, a coalition of artists working to raise awareness and local funds for women in Southern Sudan, will host a major exhibit and auction on November 27 at the Fairfield Arts Center to help finance educational and vocational initiatives for women in the South Sudanese village of Ariang. Local Connecticut artists including Jill Gordon, Wendy MacCordy and Linda Francis of Westport, (all Pink House Painters) will join others from around the country to exhibit new works created specifically for this event.
The evening will begin with an address from Gabriel Bol Deng, A Lost Boy of Sudan and founder of Hope for Ariang, an organization bringing education, financial and logistical support to his war torn village and surrounding areas of South Sudan. Over the past three years Gabriel has spoken to hundreds of school children in Fairfield County about his harrowing story, and of the importance of education, hope and perseverance.
The Sudan Canvas Project seeks to raise awareness through art of human rights atrocities in Sudan; all proceeds from the sale of the November 27 exhibit and auction will go towards a microfinanced project for women in Gabriel’s South Sudanese village of Ariang.
