Khakis For A Cause
Monday, May 11, 2009

The Darien Sport Shop will be collecting slightly worn khakis (and other men's casual summer clothing) between now and Memorial Day to benefit The Shelter for the Homeless which currently serves almost 100 clients per day from the Darien, Stamford, New Canaan and Greenwich area.
The Khaki Drive is part of the upcoming Made in America Trunk Show featuring Bill (Thomas) founder of Bill's Khakis, Reading, Pa. taking place at the store located at 1127 Post Road, Darien all day this Saturday, May 9th. Other Made in America brands featured in the Darien Sport Shop Men's Department include: Southwick, Hickey Freeman, Gitman Brothers, and Individualized Shirts.

The highlight of the event will be a visit from Bill, himself, to host a Soda, Beer and Pretzel Fest (including his favorite pretzels brought up from Reading, Pa.). Bill will be on hand to autograph pants pockets and to give out free gifts with each purchase. Bill's Khakis makes its home in downtown Reading, PA in a renovated warehouse building that is on the National Historic Register. Bill's chose to locate there to serve as an example that a 21st century business can still compete in a city that was built on a 20th century economy. Bill's Khakis has been named to Inc. Magazine's Inner City 100 five times as one of America's fastest growing inner city businesses. They pride themselves on being American made, with true American values, saying "Who said it can't be done in America today?"
The Shelter for the Homeless is committed to providing a safe overnight shelter for men who are homeless, and a wide range of support services to assist both men and women in achieving the their highest level of self-sufficiency. Shelter for the Homeless is the only regional shelter in the four-town area with overnight emergency beds for men and drop-in day program for men and swomen. The Shelter has 67 regular beds but can accommodate up to 101 clients during winter months and in emergencies. Breakfast and dinner are provided daily.
