Tarry Lodge which opened in Fall 2008 is located in Port Chester, NY. This restaurant is co-owned by Chefs Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich. They own 12 restaurant hot spots in NY, LA and Las Vegas. Some restaurants in NY that you may be familiar with are Lupa Osteria Romana, Esca, Casa Mono, Bar Jamon, Otto, Del Posto and Babbo which is their flagship restaurant. It typically takes 3-4 weeks to get a reservation and they are available online at Opentable.com. Executive Chef Andy Nusser creates classic and modern Italian dishes – fresh antipasti, pastas, remarkable pizzas, innovative fish and meat dishes and scrumptious desserts.
Last Sunday my husband and I visited the Tarry Lodge after not having a reservation. We happened to walk in close to closing and with a little luck they accommodated us in the dining room for dinner. It was quite the dining experience. Our meal was superb and the atmosphere was wonderful. Warm tuscan painted colored walls, along with old fashioned black and white floor tiles added a nice touch to the ambiance.
My dinner began with very friendly and knowledgeable waiters that were both attentive and cordial. At first, homemade focaccia bread and marinated olives were served complimentary which I could not get enough of. We ordered some very fantastic classico red wine which paired well with our dinner. We started with the gorgonzola with walnut salad. This salad was artistically created with heaps of frisee, robust gorgonzola cheese and large walnuts.
We ordered the hot sausage with roasted olive pizza and pappardelle bolognese pasta, which were both absolutely delicious and would recommend to anyone. The restaurant has a wood burning oven which is why the pizza was thin, golden, hot and bubbly. Perfetto!
The pappardelle pasta was very hearty and incredibly flavorful. The Bolognese sauce is made with three types of meat (beef, pork, veal) and the pasta is made fresh at the restaurant. This dish tastes exactly like the bolognese I had at Babbo a few years ago. For dessert, we had the warm chocolate cake with bitter oranges and pistachio gelato. It was superb.
Tarry Lodge serves unique Italian dishes and the prices are reasonable. The portions are quite large and can be easily shared. Antipasti range from $5-$9, salads range from $10-$12, pizzas are priced from $10-$14 and pastas are priced at around $16. Secondi such as skirt steak with cannellini beans w/ salsa verde ($21) and whole roasted branzino with blood orange marmalade ($25) can also be found on the menu.
I would absolutely like to try the salami piccante with crispy porcini pizza, gargenelli with funghi trifolati pasta and panettone pudding with dulce de leche gelato at my next visit. What an outstanding restaurant and a wonderful dining experience.
If you do not have a reservation you can typically sit in the saloon like bar area which is very stylish. You feel like you are at a saloon in Italy. There are grey marble tables and incredible Chianti wine bottles displayed. You may also order from the vast take out menu at Tarry Lodge To-Go. That is available every day starting at noon.
