There's No Match
Monday, September 29, 2008

Just when you are sick and tired of all your old favorite standbys, you discover a new outstanding restaurant you can't stop talking about.
Except that it's not new. In fact, Connecticut Magazine named Match of South Norwalk, the best restaurant in Fairfield County the last two years. How had we missed the lively and loud joint in the middle of the SoNo restaurant district?
We went for our anniversary on Saturday night. We're wild for Match.
The energy of Washington Street transfers indoors at Match. See and be seen. The simple paper table cloth uniquely stamped with the restaurant's logo promise a twist on classic plates. The food and service deliver.
Each plate is distinctive, delicious and perfectly proportioned. There's something for everyone. From the Short Rib Nugget appetizers (for the Meat Lover) to the Blood Orange Tuna Sashimi (for the Sushi fanatic), you'll find a wide-ranging options for every discerning palate. Suzy's hubby was bowled over by the shrimp cocktail, ceviche-style, served on wonton chips.
The prices can be high (the Kobe Beef special topped out at $79!) but it's worth a night not to worry about the bill. We didn't see any prices on the cocktail menu, so I'm not even sure how much the Match Margarita ran but I had to have two. (They reminded me of those devlish Long Island Iced Teas slurped on the sly in high school.)
Match doesn't seem like the place to order pasta. Never fear. It's homemade and not overwhelming in serving size but memorable. The goat cheese gnocchi with puttanesca sauce and a hint of olive was a big hit at our table.
Now Suzy's got a go-to restaurant where we can confidently entertain the hip friends from the City, the hard-to-impress in-laws and the impressionable best friend from college.
Suzy's Tip: Order the chocolate cake early so it's ready to literally melt in your mouth at dessert time. It's worth the calorie splurge.
Oh, and try Match's new sister storefront, Market Restaurant, in Stamford.
