Wednesday, August 17, 2011

When you’re headed to the beach on Saturday, stop by the 4th Annual Lemonade Stand for Rett at 272 Fairfield Beach Road. Beginning at 1 PM you can enjoy refreshing lemonade and delicious cookies plus face painting and more to benefit the International Rett Syndrome Foundation (IRSF: www.rettsyndrome.org) for use in future scientific studies to help find a cure for this devastating disorder.
Avery & Keegan McMahan’s sister Keilly, age 11, has Rett syndrome. She cannot speak, has seizures and breathing difficulties, has little use of her hands, she can not care for herself in anyway and has limited ability to play. Together, they decided they wanted to do something to help their older sisterwith a lemonade stand in 2008. That year they raised $250. In the last three years their lemonade stand has been able to collectively raise $6250.00 for Rett syndrome research. By supporting their lemonade stand, you’ll be helping them find a cure for Rett Syndrome.

About Rett Syndrome
Rett syndrome is a neurological disorder seen primarily in females. Infant girls seem to develop normally til about 6-18 months of age, then their development drastically slows down and many go through a rapid regression including the loss of speech, no functional hand use, loss of the ability to walk. Further, girls with Rett syndrome suffer from breathing abnormalities, seizures, scoliosis, and many require feeding tubes. All girls and women affected by Rett syndrome are completely dependent on others to care for them and ensure their survival.
