Have a Drink on Mo
Wednesday, April 18, 2007

This is the fourth installment of our weekly profile of an admired Mom at Work.
Maureen (Mo) Abrahamson is a go-getter who worked in real estate in New York City, received her MBA from NYU and thought a corner office in Manhattan was in her immediate future.
Today, she owns Mos Wine & Spirits on the Post Road in Fairfield. And shes never looked back.
Am I glad my path went down a different path? Mo asks. Every day I say thank you.
Mo and her husband Mark moved to Connecticut in the mid-1990s while Mark ran the well-regarded Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant for eight years. The couple then opened their own restaurant, Ocean 211, in Stamford. While it still thrives today, Ocean 211 took its toll on the owners. Its a hard business for a young family, Mo said of her young daughter Maddy. The Abrahamsons decided to sell the restaurant and open Mos Wine & Spirits in May 2003.
Nearly four years later, Mo is proud to say her storefront offers the largest selection in town with the best prices and the most helpful, nice employees. Her target market is quite diverse, so she carries $3.99 bottles of White Zinfandel as well as $500 bottles of Bordeaux.
Mos higher education has paid off. Shes responsible for all aspects of the business -- cash flow analysis, forecasting, insurance, payroll and whatever else comes up, she explains. She also spends five hours each day manning the register, yakking it up with our wonderful customers.
Mo cites her flexible work schedule to attend events for her 7-year-old daughter Maddy. I own the business, she explains. If I need to be at Burr Elementary for something in Maddys class, thats my priority. I just need to schedule for it.
