Moms at Work
A Funky Monkey
Wednesday, May 09, 2007
May 8th is the day Melissa Hain has been anxiously awaiting -- the grand opening of her childrens consignment and resale boutique, Funky Monkeys in Black Rock.
Theres another date in the very near future that conjures up even more nervous excitement. Melissa has her eye on the end of July when shell bring home her 5-month-old adopted daughter, Louisa, from Guatemala.
The two dates are inseparable in her mind. Melissa, a former art instructor, has opened the store in order to combine her work life and new role as mom.
For my own peace of mind I need to know that I can have my daughter with me as much as possible and still earn a living, the single mom explained. I loved being an art teacher but now I need to focus on what will be best for my daughter. She'll come to work with me. Maybe I'll even be able to get some work done!
Funky Monkeys, located across the street from Luigis restaurant and about one block south of Ash Creek Saloon, will stock specialty labels and designer/boutique brand clothing, sizes newborn to 6x.
Her advertising has been minimal so far, using word-of-mouth to get the word out for Funky Monkeys launch. Ive had really great responses so far, she said of her store. There is no other childrens store like this in Fairfield or the surrounding area. Melissa also plans to incorporate close-out items in the store and brand-new items from boutiques and showrooms from past seasons.
Funky Monkeys, 173 Post Road at Grasmere Plaza
5 Questions for Melissa Hain, owner of Funky Monkeys:
Why the name Funky Monkeys? I wanted a name that was fun and catchy. To me "little monkey" is a term of endearment, and I also needed an appropriate word to describe the style of the store and the clothes that I am selling...hence, Funky Monkeys.
Favorite brand of children's clothing? Petit Bateau, Lucky Brand and BlaBla kids
If you could change one thing about Fairfield, what would it be? More mom and pop stores and more small boutiques
Best business advice youve received? Love what you do
Most embarrassing Ipod download? Everything from the Spice Girls
