The movie this night is "The Best Man", the perfect film for this time of year -- an electoral year.

"The Best Man" (1964)
Gore Vidal's 1960 Broadway hit about the behind-the-scenes machinations for the presidential nomination at a national political convention was brought to the screen intact by director Franklin Schaffner in 1964. Henry Fonda stars as an Adlai Stevenson-type liberal who is challenged by a cunning and rather vicious Richard Nixon-type conservative played by Cliff Robertson. Oscar nominee Lee Tracy steals every scene he's in as a very droll ex-president who is clearly modeled on Harry Truman. Now that presidential nominations are locked up months before the conventions, the picture has become a time capsule from a long-vanished era, but Vidal's savage and very funny view of American politics is still highly entertaining (and relevant). The strong supporting cast includes Kevin McCarthy, Margaret Leighton, Ann Sothern and Edie Adams.
