When You Can't Be Out, Be In

Monday, March 19, 2007

Suzy knows your kids have cabin fever, hers sure do.

Some indoor activity ideas for the smaller set:

Playtime Village
It's just up the Bridgeport connector. A Mom's best friend for ages 5 and under. A warehouse-like space with tons of toys, dressup clothes, slides, and bikes.
There's a special area for babies in case you need to get out of the house.
Open 7 days a week. Pay the daily rate of $10 ($8 for 2nd child) or buy a longer membership.
Don't forget the socks - it's a requirement for parents and kids!

Fairfield Library
The children's floor allows for a little freedom, particularly for the under-3's. Have a puppet show or put on a costume. Check the storytime schedule.

Westport Library
For a change of scenery, check out the Westport children's area. More room to roam and make sure to find the toys area. Hidden gem: you can check out puzzles, games and wooden trucks. Make sure to register at the front desk with your Fairfield library card if you want to take something home to play with for a few days.

Kids U
An expansive playspace that is open to kids enrolled in a class at Kids U. They offer everything from cooking to gymnastics. The spring session begins March 18 and lasts 12 weeks for $325. Additional siblings get 10% discount. They do a fun, action-packed birthday party here.
507 Westport Ave, Norwalk, #847-2085, M-Th 9-6P, Fri 9-1:45, Sat 9-11:45 AM (otherwise closed for birthday parties). www.kids-u.com

Stepping Stones Children's Museum
Suzy's fave for a rainy day ... but a lot of other Moms always have the same idea. Explore the rotating exhibits, ride in a helicopter, race a subway car or discover your inner artist with hands-on play areas. There's even a toddlers-only gallery for the crawling set. Bring your lunch or eat out in the Museum Cafe.
$8/person or check out the annual family memberships.
www.steppingstonesmuseum.org for hours since they are limited to school groups on certain days. #203-899-0606, 303 West Ave, Norwalk.

Little Gym and My Gym
Have "open play" for members, usually in the early evening. Check their websites.

Hands On Pottery
A great place for some bonding. Moms may find they enjoy the projects as much as the little ones. Take your pick of a wide range of items to hand paint and put your own finishing touches on. Maybe a hand print, a name or just your own style. Great place to make teacher gifts from the entire class. Dawn, the owner, lets you take teacher gifts out to have the class sign and then bring back for the kiln. Gifts to be treasured forever.
