Dorm Essentials
Wednesday, July 11, 2007

This day has been creeping up on you for 18 years, will you be ready? Emotionally, probably not.
Here are some suggestions to get your son or daughter out the door with the right stuff.
Essentials you know about
Computer and printer: Most colleges offer great deals on notebooks like Dell and Apple. A benefit of buying through the school in addition to the savings is the IT support if anything goes wrong. Check the college bookstore website for more information.
TV/DVD Check with your roommate and share this one
Refrigerator Be sure to rent this through the school. The university usually offers the best deal.
Sheets One recommendation here: Extra long. Standard twin sheets won't fit the dorm beds. The schools usually send out a flyer during the summer with reasonable rates if you purchase through them. The sheets are great and fit the beds. Another good deal.
Rugs Don't haul them across state lines. Sold in the parking lots on campus on move-in day.
Essentials you might not know about:
Pottery Barn Teen Dottie Boyfriend Backrest: $79 A must for all dorm rooms
www.pbteen.com

Most desks have lamps. You'll want a clip-on for the bed. www.target.com $9.99

lHome Dual alarm clock radio: $99.99 www.ihome.com

Honeywell Super Turbo Fan: $11.99 A must-have for hot late summer days www.target.com

Microwave $69.99 www.target.com
Expect to make a trip to the college's closet Target or Walmart for the little things:
extension cords
surge protectors
small hand vacuum
door mirror
first aid kit
white grease board for outside of the door
under the bed storage bins
bed risers
removable adhesive hooks
flip flops for the shower
paper plates and cups
endless amounts of snacks and bottled water
