The Best Playgrounds Around
Monday, May 07, 2007
If you need to get out with the Young Ones, pack a picnic and head to a a new playground. Here are Suzy's best bets in and around Fairfield.
Sandcastles at Jennings Beach - The go-to spot when the sun peeks out and you need a quick getaway. When the kids get bored, take a walk on the beach. Remember you'll need a town beach sticker for free access beginning Memorial Day.
Osborn Hill Elementary School Playground - When school's out, this is a quiet place to climb and explore but not enough benches for moms to take a load off while the kids take a break.
Owen Fish Memorial Park
If you're looking for a shady spot with plenty of baby swings, try Owen Fish on Stratfield Road in Fairfield. A smaller park where the parking lot is very close to the swing sets so no real walking to do. Perfect for moms with multiples!

Compo Beach Playground - Westport
Hurry, Hurry.... you'll need a Westport beach sticker after May 15th. It may be worth the $15 anyway with all the terrific facilities at Compo. The playground, refinished in spring 2006, is out of the world and can keep toddlers through age 10 occupied for hours. Due to its newness, it's clean and always packed. The only drawback is that with all the towers, tunnels and tires, it's hard to keep track of your brood. There are picnic table adjacent to the playground. The beach is right there so walks are a must.
Cherry Lawn Park - Darien
You know it's a good one when the Fairfield County nannies all bring their charges somewhere. A perfect place for a pinic. Best of all, it's all enclosed so if you have more than you can handle, this is a safe spot. Very clean and so are the newly renovated restrooms. 27.5 acres. Five tennis courts, small pond with dock, multi-use Casey Field, nature trails, playground areas, basketball court, softball field, picnic areas.
120 Brookside Road, Darien

Merwin Meadows Park - Wilton
Fenced in play area for little ones and bigger ones. 17 acres, picnic facilities and swimming pond.
Lovers Lane, Wilton
