It's Strawberry Picking Time

It's officially Strawberry Season in Connecticut. That means it's time for shortcake, jam and daquiris. If you're looking for some outdoor fun with the kids, head to Shelton to the Jones Farm for some old-fashioned strawberry picking. The short season runs now through mid July. Please call the Crop Report at 203-929-8425 before you head over to confirm hours and picking location.

Once you pick, try these great summer recipes.
Strawberry Balsamic Salad with Goat Cheese
Combine Jones Grown strawberries and greens with CT grown goat cheese for a local twist on this early summer salad.
Ingredients:
For the Salad:
1 medium bowl of arugula or other mixed greens (spinach, buttercrunch lettuce)
1 pint strawberries, hulled and sliced
1 small package of local goat cheese
For Balsamic Vinaigrette:
½ cup olive oil
2 tbs balsamic vinegar
2 tsp mustard
Pinch of salt and ground black pepper
Directions:
Whisk together ingredients for the balsamic vinaigrette (olive oil, vinegar, mustard, salt, and pepper), and pour over sliced strawberries.
Arrange the mixed greens in a bowl. Toss with the strawberries and balsamic vinaigrette just before serving, then top with dollops of goat cheese. To add variety, try mixing in fresh herbs with the greens. For a twist on the vinaigrette, substitute half of the balsamic vinegar for CT grown black currant juice.
Strawberry Salsa
Great with corn chips, pita chips, or served on top of fish and chicken.
Ingredients:
1 Serrano chili or jalapeño chili, chopped fine
1 quart strawberries, hulled and finely chopped
1 yellow bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and chopped fine
1 red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and chopped fine
4 Tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
3 Tbsp fresh lime juice
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar, if desired
Directions:
Gently toss salsa ingredients together. Set aside for 15-30 minutes to allow flavors to combine. Serve with tortilla chips, toasted pita chips or over grilled chicken or fish.
