Monday, August 10, 2009

The Norwalk Exchange Club will debut the "Bar·B·Q Pit" at Oyster Fest in September. The three-day event – occurring Sept. 11-13 at Veteran's Park -- will include amateur and professional cooking competitions, tasting opportunities, cooking/grilling/smoking demonstrations, on-site vendors of barbeque, BBQ-related products and live entertainment.
Local grillers are urged to join in on the fun. The "Thrill of the Grill" – an amateur cooking competition – will be held Sept. 12. Local entrants are welcome to enter competitions for grilled chicken breast, seafood, pork chop and burgers. Professional grillers will judge the competition and an award will be presented to a winner in each category.
For more information and applications, go to www.NorwalkBBQ.com.
Celebrity barbecue expert Jack MacDavid, from the Food Network's "Grillin' & Chillin' with Bobby Flay" will be both competing and vending his world famous ribs.
In addition to the "Thrill of the Grill" amateur contest, Professional competitions (just like on the Food Network) take place Saturday Sept. 12 with a grilling competition sanctioned by the New England Barbeque Society. The categories are chicken breast, pork chop, burger and seafood. Sunday, Sept. 13 is a traditional low & slow barbecue contest sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society featuring chicken, ribs, pork and brisket. Over $20,000 in cash prizes will be awarded over the 3 days.
For those looking to sample barbecue fare, the competition will include three People's Choice competitions. A Wings Competition takes place Friday, a Whole Hog competition and a Chowder Cook-Off take place on Saturday. People can sample items entered in each contest and vote on the foods they like best," explains Bernson.
Additional competitions during the event will include an Iron Chef challenge on Sept. 11, a barbecue sauce competition on Sept. 12 and a Spirit Competition on Sept. 13 that recognizes the cooking site with the most patriotic theme.
The deadline for professional and amateurs to sign on for the competitive events is Aug. 21.
