In Memoriam: September 11 Tenth Anniversary
The tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks is here. However you choose to observe, there are many events throughout the county to attend with friends, family, or on your own. There are events to foster discussion, and those to encourage quiet reflection.

Here’s a list of local observances throughout Fairfield County:
Fairfield Museum and History Center – September 11, 2011, the museum presents a free exhibition and interfaith service lead by local clergy from Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities. The exhibition runs now through September 18, and features previously unreleased photos of Ground Zero, taken by acclaimed photographer, Stephen Wilkes. The interfaith service begins at 3:00 p.m. Details are here.

Fairfield Woods Branch Library – September 10, 2011, the library offers a screening of the iconic film, “9/11,” created by French filmmakers and brothers Jules and Gedeon Maudet. The brothers were in New York City, working on a documentary about a rookie firefighter at a lower Manhattan firehouse. A loud roar overhead caused Jules to turn his rolling camera skyward. In doing so, he captured the only existing filmed image of the first plane flying into the World Trade Center. Their documentary captures raw images of that terrible day and the days afterward. The film screens at 2:00 p.m. Then, on September 12, 2011, the library presents a screening of the film “9/12: From Chaos to Community.” It is a moving portrait of those who gave their time, and in some cases their health and even their lives, to rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. This film screens at noon and 2:00 p.m. Information is here.

Westport Library – September 7, 2011, journalist and author Amy Waldman will be in house to discuss her novel, The Submission, a fictionalized account of the struggle to create a September 11 memorial in New York City. It is a cross-cultural portrait of Americans trying to come to terms with their own grief and the political struggles that emerge. Author discussion begins at noon. Find out more here.

Sherwood Island State Park 9/11 Memorial – September 14, there will be a special ceremony to honor Connecticut’s first responders from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Information is here.

Voices of 9/11 – The Fairfield County Chorale joins a chorus of voices across the country in a kind of “Rolling Requiem.” Choirs from Long Island to Hawaii will sing Mozart’s Requiem as the remembrance makes its way across time zones. Fairfield’s will be performed at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1719 Post Road at 7:00 p.m. Details are here.
