Read on about this new Latin hotspot in Bridgeport, penned by galpal Jill.
Nestled in a former house on Madison Avenue lies Taberna, a fabulous new addition to the growing Bridgeport restaurant scene. Defining itself as a "food and wine bar", Taberna offers delicious and innovative Latin cuisine in a chic setting.
We started with the stuffed piquillo peppers – a perfect harmony of ground chicken, shrimp, and rice stuffed inside a sweet pepper and accented by a sharp arugula salad and balsamic drizzle. Next came Paella Valenciana, perfectly al dente rice studded with a generous amount of seafood, sausage, and chicken. Given that Taberna is owned by the same people as La Paella in Norwalk, it's not surprising that they have mastered this dish. We also enjoyed the potato-crusted salmon, in which impossibly thin slivers of potato were wrapped around a generous and perfectly cooked fillet. The accompanying spinach rounded out this winning entree. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the presentation of the dish, which was absolutely beautiful. While we didn't try them on this visit, Taberna also offers fresh pasta and pizzas (which I'm told are quite good) and a tapas menu. Dessert was a decadent warm chocolate cake. Not one of those ubiquitous (yet yummy) molten lava cakes but a rich, dense wedge of fudge, ideal for the sharing. The wine list offered many interesting and reasonably priced selections, a good portion of which hailed from Spain. Our very knowledgeable and friendly waiter was more than happy to make recommendations.
Taberna is a great place to enjoy a leisurely dinner or a more casual meal in the lovely bar area, and has quickly become a new favorite.
