Saturday night in lively South Norwalk, my husband and I had a wonderful dinner at Osetra. Billed as an Oyster Bar & Fish House, it really offers so much more.  We were greeted by Casey, the ring leader of the front and main bartender.  If you are unsure of where to get started beverage or food wise, he will steer you in the right direction given your preferences.  An extensive variety of wines by the glass allows you to create your own pairing menu. I started by trying out some oysters from Wellfleet and Bee's River, MA, which were delightful.

For appetizers, I selected the carpaccio of beef short ribs which was beautifully presented over a generous amount of goat cheese with a bit of garlic mayo topped with some mache lettuce.  Yummy!  My husband had the fried oysters which melt in your mouth accompanied by mouth bursting blackberries and a hint of comforting maple syrup sour cream, a clever unexpected match.

Moving onto the main course, I chose the baby iceberg "Lumaca" salad which had beautiful garlic escargot, golden raisins, crisp bacon and a wonderful boursin dressing.  It was a perfect summer salad that was light, savory and filling.  My husband had the roasted duck, dressed with warm asiago and a bing cherry vinaigrette.  The duck was cooked a perfect medium rare, the cherries themselves were a bit cold paired with the warm duck, would have been better if at room temperature.  Not lacking in an assortment of sides to add to your entrées, we tried the green and white asparagus topped with a fried egg, unique and delicious.  Rounding out the evening was a selection of pies, served a la mode, cherry for me and blueberry for my husband.  It was a nice ending to an enjoyable meal.

We are "early bird foodies" -- with two children under the age of five so we try to make it home in time to say good night. So what could be more perfect, "Osetra Hour" it's every day at the bar from 5-7 pm.  They take 20% off your bill excluding the raw bar and hard alcohol.  It includes the rest of the menu, wines by the glass and beer.

The menu changes daily according to what fresh and available.  The foods are a pleasing combination of the not so traditional.  The atmosphere is cozy and one could easily end up becoming a regular.  Seating at the bar is on a first come first serve basis, table seating is warm and inviting and there are table outside as well.

So why not give it a try.
