A Family Retreat
Sunday, July 12, 2009

Suzy and her three girls (ages 10, 8 and 6) hit the road for a two-night getaway to Woodloch Resort in the Poconos. Before our arrival, our friend who is intimately familiar with Woodloch described it as "Disney meets Dirty Dancing". This statement could not be more accurate. You feel like you have stepped back in time with the woodsy, casual atmosphere and yet, there is an endless amount of entertainment that it is difficult to fit it all in – just like Disney.

We barely scratched the surface in a two night, three day trip to the resort. When we arrived a friendly and helpful service representative, Kathy, went through the daily schedule selections, set us up at our dining room table which we would eat our three meals at each day, and notified housekeeping that we arrived in order to get our room ready in advance of check in. Following lunch, we participated in a group event "Double Dare". This is a laugh-out loud competition where the contestants compete in six stations which include bubble blowing, a mud puddle jump, water slide race and the funniest of all is where each person sits in corn syrup in one specially designed toilet and moves to another toilet with corn flakes. The winner is the one who has the most cereal stuck to their rear end. Who comes up with these ideas? It could be Joey Ranner, the "Master of Fun" Social Director who is just one of hundreds of dedicated employees that truly care about the guests experience there.

After Double Dare, we hit the lake where there are kayaks, paddle boats, row boats, and a huge water slide into the lake where you can swim out to the float. Obviously safety is paramount. There are lifeguards covering the lake side, helping with the boats and informing each person about the flotation device requirements on property. There are an abundance of them available as well. Along the lake, there is a playground, volleyball court, snack bar and a beach with tons of lounge chairs available. We were tipped off to one of the best activities on site - the Bumper Boats. Again, we had a blast, laughed a lot and got completely soaked. To complete our afternoon, the girls insisted on a swim in the pool(s). We went from the heated outdoor pool, to the heated indoor pool, and then they discovered the indoor splash pool which has miniature slides, water spraying from water guns, trees, beavers and the wall or ground. All three girls (ages 10, 8 and 6) had a ball!!! After dinner at our assigned table, we hit the bumper cars, arcade and the "Forest" a unique indoor playground that entertained the girls for hours. We headed back for an amazing Firework display over the lake that we enjoyed from the deck of our room.
Our second day we revisited our favorite activities, had several different choices for group activities like "Name that Tune", a "Children's Birthday Party", "Family Bowling" and much more. We enjoyed a scenic boat of the lake and learned about some history of the resort before our lunch and afternoon on the lake and in the pools. At night, there was a theme dinner "Cruise into the 70's" and a parade of characters which all the children loved including Popeye, Winnie the Pooh, Willie the Dolphin, Sponge Bob, Aqua Man, Toot the Tugboat, and several more. Following dinner, entertainment in the nightclub was music, a show and comedy for all ages to enjoy!

Some things that make Woodloch really special are how the employees truly seem to care about the guests and also enjoy creating each experience for the guests! One of my favorite parts of each day was to see what John Kiesendahl, one of the Woodloch owners, walk the dining room, visit with each table while wearing funny pants – I think the Scooby Doo pants were our favorite.

Before heading home, we made sure that we hit the arcade, the forest and the bumper boats one last time. We were sorry to miss the cookout on the front lawn, the Island Day Carnival and the Beach side "Waterslide Contest". It looks like we will have to visit again – maybe for the The Lodge at Woodloch's "Destination Spa" or the Woodloch Springs Golf Course. You owe it to yourself to look into Woodloch for your next family vacation, golf trip or getaway with friends. The cost is not to be taken lightly though – with all the meals, games, shows, and activities included, this trip will take a chunk out of the savings. From what we gather though, it is well worth it to hundreds of families that schedule their next family vacation at Woodloch while checking out from this one!
