Let's Play with the Animals
Sunday, July 12, 2009

This week's round up is all about Zoo's. Suzy's kid loves the animals, the feeding them, the smell (well not so much), climibing on the statues and just generally being wowed by these creatures. Thus we are telling all of our galpals about some lesser known and popular places to check out a monkey or 5....
The quintessential Bronx Zoo has a bit of everything and will take an entire day if done right. This summer marks the 10th Anniversary of their Congo Gorilla Forest Exibit. This wkd (7-17/18) celebrate with the four legged friends with storytimes, meet n greets, traditional african dances, arts & crafts and more. Chek out the full events listing here. And of course yoiu can still visit the giraffes, lions, tigers and bears, if that's more your speed.
A few miles south of the Bronx you will find a little haven of a zoo in Central Park. Nestled on the southeast corner of the Park (enter at 65th or Central Park South), it is the perfect way to kill and hour or 2 if you find yourself in the city. It's also a great introduction for wee ones who get overwhelmed easily. You can watch the sea lions get fed, walk through the rainforest with the birds all around, check out the penguins (our favorite) and polar bears. Right up the block is the childrens zoo with mazes, tunnels, a petting zoo and more. This is by far the best value at $10 for adults, $5 for kids and under 3 is free.
Keep trekking further south and you wind up in Brooklyn at the Prospect Park Zoo. Just as manageable as Central Park with a Carousel and the Botanical Gardens near by. This is worth the trip for the 1-2-3 punch of activities. Check out the discovery trail and the kangaroos.
Crossing over east into Coneecticut, we have the Beardsley zoo in Bridgeport. Somewhere between the Bronx and Central Park in terms of exertion, its a nice, clean fun small town place to be. See Buck Howdy live with a paid admission and kids 7-15 can be part of the Zoo Patrol
Down Route 17 check out the Bergen County Zoological Society at Van Suan Park in Paramus. Open every day and includes a train ride, pony rides a great playground and a carusel. And you can swing into Paramus Park Mall or Garden State Plaza for dinner, or Whole Foods, Trader Joe's or Fairway on the way home. Suzy is all about economy of motion, so this would be her pick to get everythign done!
If you are really jonesing for a day trip - take 95 south to America's first Zoo in Philly, going on 150 years. Truly a great place and well worth the trip.
