Stuff Suzy Loves
No Room to Complain
Thursday, April 12, 2007

Lent may be over but Suzy is giving something else up for 21 days. Not ice cream, not cookies... Complaining.
Rev. Will Bowen of Christ Church Unit in Kansas City, Missouri has created an unusual prop to gain followers for his newest sermon subject: give up negative talk for three weeks. In an effort to make the lesson practical, the church purchased purple bracelets and gave them away. Parishioners are encouraged to move the bracelet to the other arm if they catch themselves complaining.
The Today Show, People Magazine and The Oprah Winfrey Show are among the high-profile media outlets to showcase the Complaint Bracelet and yack about how hard it is to steer away from bitch sessions and concentrate on being grateful for the good in our lives.
Rev. Bowen defines complaining as an expression of pain, grief or discontent. "Surely, it makes sense to express pain, grief or discontent occasionally but most people do so constantly," he said. "In so doing, they are talking and thinking about what they do not want in their life and, thereby, attracting more pain, grief and discontent. Instead, think and talk about what you are grateful for. Talk about what you DO want and not what you DON'T want."
Okay, we're hooked. We've ordered the bracelets but they are backordered for 3-6 weeks. So we'll get all of our negativity out before June and be ready to board the Positive Train.
