EMERGENCY RELIEF NEEDED FOR HAITI
Hurricane Hanna's flooding in Haiti has brought about the most severe loss of life and property damage from one storm in a single country so far this hurricane season. Tropical Storm Fay made a westward track through the center of Haiti on Aug. 16. Hurricane Gustav slammed into the southern shore on Aug. 26. Tropical Storm Hanna dumped torrential rain on the northern part of the country Sept. 3, and as relief workers were readying to that prevented emergency workers from reaching the scene. Haiti, which occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic is to the east), is known to be at the center of a hurricane belt through the Caribbean, but this summer that belt has become a
hurricane highway. News reports estimate that more than 300 people have been killed by the combined storms, with Gonaïves - the fourth largest city - the hardest hit. A wall of water and mud crashed into the first floor of a hospital, killing everyone on that floor. Today, the city was under water. After Hanna, there was only one road for relief workers to get into Gonaïves. Ike took that one out. Towards that end, the Town of Ramapo and the Office of County Executive C.Scott Vanderhoef have joined with the Ramapo Haitian Taskforce, Konbit Nèg Lakay, IFG Production, HACSO, Haiti Solidarite, the Rockland Immigration Coalition, and Saint Joseph Church to collect and deliver essential items to bring to the flood victims in Haiti. A request for the use of an Air Force C-5 cargo plane for transport of the items has been made to the NYS Office of the Governor. Approval by Governor Paterson is anticipated this week.
