Help feed those in need with Soup Angels
Monday, May 04, 2009

Soup Angels is an all-volunteer, nonsectarian group of service-minded individuals operating under the non-profit status of the First Reformed Church of Nyack. Their goal is to provide a free, nutritious, handmade supper to anyone who needs a meal. Every Wednesday of the year, from 5:30-6:30pm in the church hall, a Soup Angels team serves our guests a meal. There are 8 serving teams, so each team serves once every couple of months.
Most Tuesday evenings a cooking crew gathers at the kitchen of church for a couple of hours of meal prep (right now they are preparing up to 80 servings of food per week). On Wednesdays, a serving team works from 4-7:30pm setting up, serving, and cleaning up the meal. They also have a shopping team that splits the weekly shopping (food stores, donations, Costco, BJ's), and a once-a-month drive team that goes to Cartaret, NJ, to pick up our meat donations.
Volunteers can join any of the above teams, or if preferred, can be put on the 'float' list. Floats are contacted whenever there is a need on a team and they have the option of helping or not, depending on their availability. Floats generally get asked to help out with the regular Wednesday teams, so if one of the other options is of special interest, please sign up for that particular team.
Soup Angels depends entirely on donations to fund our meals and so we welcome fund raising and of course financial contributions. Any further questions can be addressed to this email and if you'd like to contribute, send your check to First Reformed Church with "Soup Angels" in the memo line, and mail it to PO Box 565, Nyack, NY 10960. You will receive a tax deduction notice for all contributions.
The Soup Angels' founders, Kathie Rife or Katie Berry can be contacted at or 914-629-5849.
