So my garden died. Yes, it really did. And let me explain. This summer was a season of fun, travel, relaxation and getting centered. We went away to Ireland, OBX and for a couple of weeks camped out at my Mom’s Upper East Side apartment in the city.
Knowing all this travel would be taking place this season, I had no one to take care of the garden for me – partly because I didn’t ask and party because I wouldn’t want to ask. The garden takes a huge part of my day and to plant it with vegetables was futile in my opinion. I knew my food fix would be taken care of by my friends at the Farmers markets in my neighborhood, while at the same time I knew I was contributing to helping these local framers make a living. It was a win in my book. I also had posted a gone fishing sign on my business, so I hadn't planted many cutting flowers this year.
When I was actually home, it seemed that it was to launder the clothes, pack and off we went again. So I truly allowed myself to go with the flow and let things go. In my heart I knew it would be ok! This meant one less thing to take care of for the summer and it was just fine by me. This year!
Now that school has started and we are getting back in the routine, it is time to give my garden some attention. Removing the dead plants is full of mixed emotions - sadness that I wasn’t here tending to my plants, smelling the soil that I always take such pride in and watering at six in the morning with the birds. Turning my still growing compost pile, weeding endlessly into the evening, staking all the plants as they grow, trimming, keeping my notes in my journal and decorating it to look just right. I just have to keep reminding myself that it’s ok to take a break from time to time, even from gardening.
But like every year the excitement at the prospect of starting something brand new has taken over me again. My passion is blossoming in the Fall air. The chores to ensure the success of next years crop depends heavily on the work done now. So off to work I go.
If you are curious about the summer and the centering experience I had (and boy was it a big one), I encourage you to take a peek at my other blog – GBC Style
