It’s September... Do you know your teen’s plans for college?
What an exciting time of year! September is bursting with possibilities. Summer is waning it’s the perfect time to plan for the fall.
This time of year, the media is full of stories about teens and college:
• Which are the best schools?
• What do teens today know about the world, what is their frame of reference?
• How competitive is the field of applicants? How difficult will it be to get admitted to college for the class of 2015? 2016?
• Why are the costs of colleges and universities continuing to rise in this economy?
Now is the time to
• think through the landscape of the next two years; what your teen and you think about transitioning from high school to college; what you want those years to be
• communicate clearly and frequently about ideas, questions and concerns
• identify goals, steps on the journey to finding the colleges that are the right fit, assigning roles and responsibilities in the process
• develop a timeline for successful completion of this lengthy process
In speaking with thousands of teens over the past six years, I have developed a series of questions to support them at the very beginning of their college search:
1. What do you know?
2. What do you have yet to learn?
3. What are your worries and concerns?
4. What is your plan?
This summer I developed a workbook, The 4 Questions You Must Ask Before Beginning Your College Search, which digs deeply into this foundational work. Please download a complimentary copy here, www.majorinyou.com/ebook, and ask your teen to work through the booklet and complete the feedback survey. Learning how I can be even more helpful is important information. And, be sure to contact me with your questions!
September, the beginning of a great adventure!
