Money Matters! Teaching our teens to manage their money... and themselves!
As seniors think ahead to the fall and imagine which college is the best fit for them, the question of finances arises once again. Parents may be wondering how they can best prepare their teens for managing their money while away at college.
This week I spoke with Galia Gichon, on my radio show, College Bound & Determined. Galia is an independent personal financial expert with more than 16 years of experience in financial services, and she has been quoted or made appearances in the TODAY SHOW, CNN, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Glamour, SELF and much more. She runs her own company, Down to Earth Finance, which offers personal financial education.
Here are the highlights from my interview, which you can listen to here.
Galia suggests...
• Ensure that your teens are aware of how your family spends and saves money (from a young age!)
• Pick the right times to have these important conversations -and do it often
• Include your children in decision-making about their needs and wants and how money gets allocated
• Teach basic concepts: budgeting, how to use debit and credit cards and debt tables, compound interest, and even stocks and bonds (pick one of their favorite companies... Apple or maybe Starbucks)
• Create a realistic budget with your teen-at Clark University (where I delivered a workshop for parents on Admitted Students’ Day) incoming students receive a packet of information that gives guidance around this area-how helpful!
And, there’s some good news for parents with juniors, it may not be too late to save for college. Listen to the interview to find out more!
I’d love to hear from you! Your questions and concerns are so important! My goal is to interview over a 100 parents about their questions and concerns before and during the college search and selection process.

Galia is also the author of “My Money Matters” kit which was featured in Newsweek and the TODAY SHOW. Visit her at Down to Earth Finance
