It Takes Heart
By Joe Putala (Suzy personal trainer and fave)
Have you ever heard the expression "use your inner strength", well it couldn't be more true. Most people these days have made the transition
to a healthier lifestyle that includes daily exercise and a balanced nutrition plan. Unfortu-nately, they relate these things to success only by what they see or the change of their physical appearance. Most people forget about that one muscle that truly is the most important, the heart! Along with it we seem to forget other important things like the lungs, blood, and all their passageways. This is what we call the cardio-respiratory system. This is composed of the cardio vascular system and the respiratory system. The cardio- vascu-lar system is the heart, blood, and blood vessels within our body. It is very important that this system runs to its best efficiency as well as its counterpart, the respiratory system. The respiratory system is comprised of the lungs and all it's passageways. Together these systems make our bodies have the ability to run, weight train, and even heal themselves. During exercise the heart pumps blood to the necessary areas to supply oxygen and nutri-ents during activity. It also helps remove waste from these areas; such as lactic acid build up. So, in general, you are only as strong and healthy as your heart is.
How can we strengthen the heart and lungs? Well the answer is cardio-respiratory training. This is where that treadmill, bike or elliptical comes into play. It's proven that just 30 minutes of light to moderate activity a day can make a difference. Any of these ma-chines will start you in the right direction. Once you can accomplish 30 minutes of light training, you can move up to the next level. This would be interval training or longer dura-tions of training at slightly higher difficulties. Always consult a trained professional for accurate training levels for true results and safety precautions.
Cardio training will improve the strength of the heart by increasing its ability to deal with internal stress (running, walking, etc.) that is being placed upon it. As a result it can decrease the possibility of a heart attack, help reduce cholesterol, and improve blood pres-sure. The increase of blood flow due to cardio can also naturally help reduce the chances of clots forming too. These clots can form in your blood vessels and if not treated can cause serious damage; including strokes. Let's not forget the positive benefits cardio train-ing has on the lungs or as we call it, the respiratory system. Doing this can help the lungs increase its ability to take in oxygen. The more oxygen we can take in the stronger, faster, and healthier we become. Oxygen is the main catalyst that once again helps fuel our bod-ies with energy when combined with glycogen and creatine. The best part about this is that the increase of cardio means the increase of caloric burn…that means weight loss! So either way it's a win, win situation!
So when thinking of your next work out session make sure to include an exercise that trains the most important muscle you have, the heart. It will thank you in the years to come!
