So this doesn't exactly quality as restaurant dish and it isn't in Rockland but close by but as you know, it's Earth Day .. and locally sourced food is all the rage. Why not check out Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture? Yes, Stone Barns is home to the 5 star dining establishment Blue Hill at Stone Barn but there are other things to do that are cheaper and involve some serious family fun.
Stone Barns is a working farm and offers great family workshops where you can get down and dirty gardening. One choice..
Hands On on the Farm: Gardening where you can garden with your kids! Learn about what's growing at Stone Barns and lend a hand in the Greenhouse or Vegetable Field. You may pull out a bed of greens and feed it to the pigs, plant seeds in the garden, or harvest fresh veggies from the fields. Registration is for children ages 2 to 14; adults may accompany children free of charge. The cost is just $7/Children and Youth Ages 2 to 14.
Another choice...
Hands On on the Farm: Egg Collecting... where you can pitch in with hands-on farm activities every Saturday and Sunday this spring, and see how farm life changes with the seasons! Learn about the life of a hen at Stone Barns, and join them to collect eggs. Registration is for children ages 2 to 14; adults may accompany children free of charge. $7/Children and Youth Ages 2 to 14
Other options for families -- an Insider's Tour (recommended for adults and those over the age of 12), a Livestock Tour.. and more.
Remember you have to pre-register for alot of the tours and events but well worth it and its only about 20 miles or a 30 minute drive across the river.
