Facing the impending arrival of talking pictures, silent film star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin, who won the Best Actor prize at Cannes last year) must decide between rejecting the vulgar new trend—and possibly slipping into obscurity—or embracing talkies, much like the young dancer and rising starlet Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) has done.
