Fall on the Farm Weekend
Join in for a weekend of family activities and adult workshops celebrating the fall season and preparing for Thanksgiving. Help feed turkeys, learn how they prepare their fields for winter, and collect ideas (and ingredients!) for your Thanksgiving table.

Programs:

Hands On on the Farm: Egg Collecting
Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14
10AM-11AM
$7/child
Pitch in with hands-on farm activities every Saturday and Sunday, and see how farm life changes with the seasons! Learn about the life of a hen at Stone Barns, and join us to collect eggs and then drop them off for the farmers to sell at market. Registration is for children ages 2 to 14; adults may accompany children free of charge.

Pick Your Own Eggs
Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14
11AM – 12PM
$12/person
During this program you and your family will get an inside peek at egg production on a small farm while getting hands-on experience with our chickens. Join us to collect freshly laid eggs, then hand-wash and package them just like Stone Barns’ farmers do. The fresh eggs you’ve collected will be yours to take home and enjoy! You will never look at farm work or store bought eggs in the same way. Each participant receives a half dozen eggs to take home.

Cooking for Kids: Pear Sauce
Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14
11AM – 12PM
$10/youth (ages 6 – 14)
Join us to cook up some delicious pear sauce – a great fall treat that’s similar to applesauce but made with sweet local pears and Stone Barns honey. Use a food mill to make a smooth sauce and pour it into jars. Each child will receive 1 jar of pear sauce to take home.

Livestock Tour
Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14
12PM – 1PM
$10/adult and $7/child or youth
Get face-to-face with Stone Barns Center’s pigs, sheep, chickens, turkeys, geese and honeybees! This specialized tour will focus on our animals: how they are raised on pasture; why each breed has been carefully selected for our small farm; and what makes all of our meat products — from fresh eggs to Thanksgiving turkeys — stand apart from the rest. You’ll leave with a true appreciation for our four-season, grassfed livestock operation.

Hands On on the Farm: Turkey Feeding
Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14

$7/child and youth
Visit our turkeys and learn about how they live at Stone Barns Center. Pitch in and help us to feed them some grain and get them gobbling!
Registration is for children ages 2 to 14; adults may accompany children free of charge.

Hone Your Knife Skills
Saturday, November 13
1PM – 3PM
$85/adult
Hone your Knife Skills just in time for Thanksgiving with this very special class. Jeff Elliot, the Executive Chef and Director of Culinary Relations for Zwilling J.A. Henckels will teach this hands-on class, working with students on how to properly hold, move and sharpen your knives, Jeff will teach you the essential techniques you need for your home kitchen, and will demonstrate how to best carve a turkey. Copies of the Complete Book of Knife Skills will be available for sale, and Jeff will gladly sign books after the class.


Meet the Farmer: Turkey

This farmer-hosted program highlights our pasture-raised turkeys. Whether you are an aspiring backyard gardener looking for tips and advice, a home cook interested in learning more about your ingredients, or a foodie seeking a deeper understanding of where your food comes from, you’re sure to enjoy this unique chance to talk shop with the best of them! This session will focus on the two varieties of Thanksgiving turkeys raised at Stone Barns, and will be led by Livestock Farmer Dan Carr.

Extending the Season: Building Winter Hoops
Saturday, November 13
2PM – 3PM
$15/adult
Join our Four-Season Grower, Jack Algiere, to learn about our approach to growing crops outdoors through the winter. Jack will demonstrate how to construct winter hoops – raised tunnels that help to protect our cold-weather crops and keep the harvest going strong through the chilly fall and winter months. Learn how to install these simple structures in your home garden, and eat local all winter!

A Commonsense Thanksgiving

Join us for a Commonsense Thanksgiving! In Chef Tom Hudgens’ new cookbook, The Commonsense Kitchen: 500 Recipes Plus Lessons for a Hand-Crafted Life, you’ll find great recipes for many occasions, including everything you’ll need to cook a wonderful, traditional Thanksgiving dinner. In addition to his favorite fall-themed recipe ideas, Tom will share stories of epic Thanksgiving dinners at Deep Springs, the college-on-a-ranch in high-desert California where students butcher their own meat and harvest their own vegetables in addition to studying Plato and Melville. Copies of The Commonsense Kitchen will be available for sale, and Tom will gladly sign books after the presentation.

Garden Tour
Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14
2PM – 3PM
$10/adult and $7/youth
Stop to smell the roses…and the compost, with a Stone Barns Center tour guide! This specialized tour will focus on the herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables in our fields, gardens and greenhouse. Learn how produce is grown sustainably on the farm, check out some of our favorite varieties, and find out which produce is the most flavorful and versatile for home gardeners and cooks. You will leave inspired to start gardening—or to visit your local farmer’s market.

Felted Pumpkins
Saturday and Sunday, November 13 and 14
2PM – 3PM
$10/child (ages 6 – 14)
Join us to craft a pumpkin out of colorful sheep’s wool. Each child will make a small felted pumpkin, and decorate it with a stem and leaves. Appropriate for children ages 6 and up accompanied by a parent.
