ABC Designs Back to School Tips
This time of year can be tricky so Ali Culliford of ABC Designs has some great tips to make this time as easy as possible:

Ease back-to-school anxiety.  Many kids, especially those in the primary grades, feel uneasy about their new surroundings and unfamiliar faces.  Take photographs of their new classroom and their new teachers.  Look at these photographs and talk about them at home to encourage your child to feel more comfortable.

Prep lunches before it’s crunch time.  Make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on Sunday night, wrap them up, and store them in the freezer.  Take them out in the morning, and they will be defrosted and delicious by lunchtime.  Utilize Tupperware to store ready-to-go lunches and snacks in the refrigerator, and pull them out each day for something new.  Leftovers work well for the sandwich avoiders.

Set routines.  Kids need structure even after a long school day.  Setting a daily afternoon-to-evening routine will allow your child to unwind, and will prepare him or her for the day to follow.  An example might be:  afternoon snack, outdoor playtime for 30-45 minutes, homework, dinner, and bath.  Young kids can also learn the foundations of organization by following an afternoon checklist: unzip my backpack, take out my lunchbox, hang my backpack near the door.  Older kids can help you to set the routine by learning to make informed decisions about the optimal time to complete their homework.
